About Time, an exhibition of new work by Sabine Koelmel and Shelley Adler at Galerie Jochen Hempel, is a playful description of the fact that this show finally brings together these two artists and friends after decades of conversation about art and life and the idea of hanging their work in the same space at the same time. And, on a more practical note, About Time, provides a meaningful context about the manner in which time plays a crucial role in the working process in making art. Koelmel’s paintings happen slowly. Sometimes years can pass as many layers of opaque and transparent glazes are applied and reapplied, gradually transforming the work from one thing to another. With Adler’s ink drawings, time is of the essence, as all the work must be completed in one go. There is no chance to return and make additions or corrections to the ink once the paper takes hold of the image.
