Black has always had a significant role in the art world. Whether it describes the mood or emotional resonance in work such as Goya’s “Black Paintings” (1819-1923) or the colour of rebellion and breaking from the entrenched canons of art history as with Malevich’s “Black Square”(1915) or the colour for the ultimate minimalist work as with Frank Stella’s Black paintings (1959), Black has always been that edgy, spiky, inky colour de rigueur for the avant garde. Even today, there is controversy over who has domain over the “truest” black paint on the market as battled out between Anish Kapoor and Stuart Semple.

Works in this show carry on the many traditions of “black paintings”, ranging from moody to suspenseful , large abstract expressionist to highly refined minimalist, figurative to abstract. Artists include Michael Davidson, Mario Trejo, Ken Webb, Dennis Ekstedt, Angela Grossmann, Jason Frizzell, Blake Senini, Mara Korkola, Shelley Adler and Attila Richard Lukacs.
